Over the years, a lot of stories have been told of how the gods walked the earth, how heroes like Achilles, Odysseus, and Leonidas conquered great kingdoms. Though some cities are lost in the past, a few are still standing up to this day. Here are some of the most famous ancient cities still existing in the world.

Damascus, Syria;
As the capital of Syria, Damascus is the second largest city in the country; with a population of about 2.5 million people. The history of this city dates back to 10000bc. But the exert time of formation is still debated. The city is regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. It is located between Africa and Asia. Since its inception, Damascus was a cultural commercial and administrative center. The city is marked by several civilizations that created it.

Athens, Greece
The rock of western civilization Athens, the capital of Greece, has a population of 3 million people. It has been inhabited for more than 7 thousand years. It is the birthplace of outstanding philosophers, writers, artist of the classical style that they gave rise to their contemporary styles. Athens is recognized as a great archeology and research center; it is full of historical museums.

Byblos, Lebanon;
Byblos is the rock of many ancient civilizations. It is one of the oldest cities that is continually inhabited for about 5 thousand years. It is a popular destination for tourist because of how many ancient structures it has to offer.

Jerusalem, Israel;

Jerusalem is one of the most visited cities in the middle east, and it is also an essential religious destination. According to the Bible, Jerusalem was found as the capital city of the United Kingdom of Israel by King David. Eight hundred thousand residents presently inhabit Jerusalem.

Varanasi, India;
India is a well famous birthplace of ancient civilization, religion and spirituality. The holy city of India Varanasi is located at the bank of the river Ganges. The history of the city goes back to the 12 century BC. It has been the destination for pilgrims and wanderers. Truth is Varanasi is older than history, tradition and older than even the legend itself. Varanasi has an outstanding cultural and religious center with many celebrated poets. It is the center of art and craft.

Cholula, Mexico;
About 2500 years ago, the city of Cholula was formed from numerous scattered villages. It has been the resident of various Latin American cultures. When the Spanish conquered the town, it began to flourish like never before it was once called by locals that lived in it” Cholula the most beautiful city outside Spain”. It has a population of 60 thousand people.

Jericho, Palestine;
Recently Jericho is just a small city with a population of 20 thousand people. In the Hebrew Bible, Jericho is called the city of palm trees. Archeological exploration had discovered settlement dating back to almost 11 thousand years. Jericho is located at the center of Palestine. Due to its natural beauty and its resources, it became a magnet to numerous invitation. In the first century, it was destroyed by the Romans but then rebuilt by the Byzantines. Soon after it was destroyed again and left deserted for centuries. In the 20 century the territory of Jericho was occupied by Jordan in Israel before it became part of Palestine in 1994.

Aleppo, Syria;

The city of Aleppo in Syria is the largest city in Syria with more than 2 million residents. The city has been inhabited for more than 8 thousand years though archeologically discovered-dates it to 13 thousand years. At various times in history, Aleppo was controlled by the Romans. The old city is full of churches and schools of the 13th century. Over the years it was subjected to the invasion which caused the resident to fortified the city. It is often called the soul of Syria.

Plovdiv, Bulgaria;

It dates back to 4000BC. Many empires ruled Plovdiv before the Romans conquered it. In 1885 the city became part of Bulgaria. And it is now the second largest city in the country. It is a symbolic economic educational and cultural center. Most old houses have been turned to museums. Though The city has become overwhelmed with restaurants, it is still a must see it.

Luoyang, China;
It is the oldest continually inhabited city in Asia; it is included in the seven great Asian capital of China. It is also considered to be the geographical center of China. It has a population of nearly 7 million people. Its exciting history has made it a tourist destination.
All of these cities among others played a huge role in shaping the world, as we know it. They were the foundation of our political, educational and economic structures.
