TRAVEL VLOGGING GEAR // BASICS
TRAVEL VLOGGING GEAR // BASICS
If you’re on a budget or just starting out, here is the basic gear you need for travel vlogging and the equipment I use, including what camera gear and editing software I like. Basics on how to travel vlog and what you need to get started. Great for backpackers or those who like to pack minimally.

nice … useful stuff…ββ
Great advice! I really needed this since I just started my own channel on traveling & culture. Thanks Mari!
A really great (and cheaper) alternative to the GoPro is the Xiaomi Yi Action Cam. It’s significantly cheaper (especially if you buy an older version) and has stood up really well to side by side tests.
Also, great idea with the beer cozies! I’m definitely going to use that
I’m planning on vlogging a bit when I go on my trip to Poland in August. I’m going to be visiting the county that my family came from so it’ll be something. I unfortunately can’t get to the village they were from without a car and I won’t have one. But I can get to the county seat from Warsaw and back by train so it won’t be too much of a problem. I think it’ll make an interesting video and various other commentary.
How many gigabytes of storage on a laptop do you recommend if you do not have a hard drive?
Great video! We are always curious about other Youtuber’s gear π Do you plan to get a drone some day?
Thanks again for the last g7x review! I was thinking about buying it since its a great point and shoot but that dust in the lens problem is a significant turnoff. I’m aware of numerous people who’ve experienced the problem and listening to your experience really helped me make my mind and look into other cameras.
Sooooo helpful! Thank you π
i hope you and Nick went to the noodle market in hagley park, coast to coast in New Brighton and farmers market at deans bush!! alot of cool stuff happened in CHCH today π
great tips. I’ll be putting my email address on everything and the coozy. I currently keep my drives in a sock π but the coozy seems a like it will have more material.
Hi Mari,
Just wondering if you are using MacBook Pro 13" for your video editing as well? I am thinking to get a MacBook Pro 13" or 15". And is it good for editing? will it freeze while you editing? Thanks, Katy
If you’re shopping for SD cards look for class 10! they either have a little U with a 1 inside of it or a 10 with a circle around it on the front! They have better reading/writing speeds so it would be faster to transfer to your laptop or to save footage. If you’re looking for an external hard drives, consider solid state ones (ssd). Solid state drives are super hard to break, it’s basically like a giant sd card as opposed to a record player (which a normal hard drive is like). solid state external drives are more expensive but they’re worth looking into as they’re way harder to break than a normal external drive!
Hey Mari, would you say that just using an iPhone 6 and a GoPro would be sufficient, or is it worth spending the extra money on a legit camera?
Thanks for this video, and for all your videos π I’m going to be spending all march/part of april in New Zealand, and I plan on vlogging a lot of it (even if the only person who watches it is mom to make sure I’m still alive on the other side of the world :P) Do you have any special way of carrying your extra go-pro batteries when you fly? I know a lot of airlines have restrictions on carrying loose Li-on batteries like the ones in the Go-Pro and I don’t wanna risk loosing my spare batteries for lack of proper packing! XD
The coozy is such a good idea! What all do you keep on your external hard drive? just the finished edited video or all the unedited footage as well?
Good video. We use the same camera gear. I think the GoPro is a lot easier to use the the Cannon. But overall both cameras are good.
Great idea on the coozey!(not sure the spelling) for the external hard drive. Definitely sharing this video with my daughter, great tips! My daughter Mia tried the free trial of Final Cut last summer when she started her channel but quickly went back to iMovie for ease of use but she might try out Adobe someday as well. You’re doing great with your February vlog challenge!
Email on SD cards. Great idea! I feel dumb because I’ve labeled everything but those. Haha!
Well done.
Thanks for the video! I actually just launched my travel vlog this week. Getting used to doing all this while living a mobile lifestyle. Still in the U.S. but hopefully going international soon. I’m very basic right now, doing all my video and audio with a Samsung Galaxy S7 phone, lol. When I wen’t minimalist and sold almost everything to travel full time, I sold all my camera equipment and my beefy editing/gaming computer. Eventually I will get a better, probably mirrorless camera and a more powerful laptop. I use and love Premiere Pro. I’ve been using it for years in my storm chasing videos, so I’ve learned most of the ins-and-outs of it (most of which aren’t needed for a basic vlog), but not sure I could ever use anything else now… especially when used with Photoshop, After Effects and Audition. My goal is to travel as cheaply as possible with as little as possible. Kinda hoping I can make good enough videos to start and build a great subscriber base before I spend too much money on equipment! Lol. Love your videos, and keep up the good work. π
love your vids. we will be in new zealand starting next month. how much longer will you be there for?
Great tips! I dropped my G7X last year on a rollercoaster ( sucked so badly ). The theme park couldnt help and told me that they cannot locate it until the park closed… so the next day they called me and said they had located my camera in pieces ( insert crying emoji here ) Lesson learned!
Good Video! Also you have a great smile π
I really love this vid! Great job! I haven’t seen anyone do it quite like this. I am impressed! I am proud to support good content like this. Keep up this amazing work! I’ll be waiting to see what you post next! π Check out my new content too? Thanks! Magnificent stuff! I’ll see what else you have on your channel. You’re on the right track! Have a nice day! π
Great video. It’s so fun to see what other vloggers use while on the road. Its so hard to keep your gear small and compact but I think you nailed it:) -Ash
This is so helpful because not everyone can afford the super expensive gear many travel bloggers use,and I just want to travel and take some pictures and maybe some video to remember my future travels,so thank you for this video!
How do you carry your camera and other stuff on a daily basis?
Did you buy it all off amazon? it’s not trustworthy to buy things like cards and batteries. Many fakes
Love Premiere Pro! I can’t afford the subscription base but I do use CS5.5 that I bought when it was released few years back.
Super helpful! I’m going on my first big trip soon and have been wondering this!! Thank you π
Great tips !
