Over the years, a lot of stories have been told of how the gods walked the earth, how heroes like Achilles, Odysseus, and Leonidas conquered great kingdoms. Though some cities are lost in the past, a few are still standing up to this day. Here are some of the most famous ancient cities still existing in the world.
As the capital of Syria, Damascus is the second largest city in the country; with a population of about 2.5 million people. The history of this city dates back to 10000bc. Due to its natural beauty and its resources, it became a magnet to numerous invitation. In the first century, it was destroyed by the Romans but then rebuilt by the Byzantines. Soon after it was destroyed again and left deserted for centuries. In the 20 century the territory of Jericho was occupied by Jordan in Israel before it became part of Palestine in 1994.

All of these cities among others played a huge role in shaping the world, as we know it. They were the foundation of our political, educational and economic structures.
